Browse Programs Admission InformationThe Master's program we plan to launch will merge the two specialties already present in the department: "Literature and Civilization" and "Language and Culture", aiming to explore, beyond Maghrebian texts and through literary and linguistic studies, other horizons of human thought within the comparative and dialogic space that the Francophonie represents worldwide.
Thus, this Master’s program is rooted in a multicultural principle. Its objective is to prepare students for potential postgraduate studies and to encourage them to engage with literatures often considered marginal or peripheral compared to French texts produced in France, which often carry a Western-centered perspective, culturally leveling through stereotypes and clichés, and consequently diminishing other worldviews. These diverse writings, however, are rich and valuable for understanding others and fostering human connection. This is exemplified by the literature (and language) of the "Beurs," whose status, despite existing for several years, remains unclear but nonetheless highlights the relationship between two civilizational spaces that complement each other through intercultural exchange, allowing Maghrebian readers to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of Maghrebian identity in participating in life's broader debates.
Other areas and literatures are also worth exploring, as we believe they are essential for enriching Maghrebian culture. These include literatures produced by writers from African countries, especially Algeria’s neighbors like Mali, Niger, and Senegal, or even more distant regions such as Madagascar or New Caledonia, where Algeria has a significant community. We also consider other regions such as the Caribbean and Quebec, places with which we share certain worldviews or simply seek to better understand directly, without the distorting lens of French criticism, which often focuses more on exoticism or folklore than on the genuine intercultural wealth these so-called peripheral texts carry.
After reviewing their applications, the thirty-five (35) students with the highest grades at the end of the French Language Bachelor's degree (new LMD system) will be selected to pursue this Master's program.
