Program Overview

Medical Residency in Algeria: A Key Step Toward Specialization

Medical residency in Algeria represents a pivotal stage in the professional training of physicians. It is a postgraduate specialized training program designed for medical doctors who have obtained their Doctor of Medicine degree, allowing them to access one or more specialties in medicine, surgery, or biomedical sciences. This system, structured and regulated by the Ministry of Health, plays a fundamental role in ensuring the quality of specialized care and promoting equitable medical coverage nationwide.

Admission to the residency is granted through a national competitive exam, organized annually and open to young doctors who have completed all their academic requirements. The ranking obtained in this exam determines the choice of specialty. The higher the score, the broader the range of options. Medical specialties are grouped into several categories (listed below).

The duration of residency varies depending on the specialty, typically ranging from four to five years. During this period, residents receive in-depth theoretical training combined with clinical immersion. They rotate through various hospital departments, actively participate in patient care under the supervision of specialist physicians and academic hospital staff, and are involved in on-call duties, seminars, and postgraduate education.

The program is validated through continuous assessment, end-of-rotation evaluations, and a final specialty examination. Upon successful completion, the resident is awarded the Diploma of Specialized Medical Studies (DEMS), authorizing them to practice as a medical specialist throughout the national territory, in both the public and private sectors
