Program Overview

Internet communication is evolving at an exponential rate. As a result, the security of data circulating over the network has become a major concern.

Malicious attacks and intrusions can disrupt many services, particularly within government institutions, banks, airports, businesses, and more — often causing massive collateral damage.

Protecting sensitive or personal information, now widely stored in networked databases, is a serious challenge. This has been clearly demonstrated by the rise in identity theft, online fraud, and the loss of confidential documents containing vast amounts of personal data.

The widespread use of mobile and wireless communication, along with the growing diversity of services enabled by ever-increasing bandwidth, also creates security gaps and complex requirements. Ensuring the safety of employees and buildings in commercial sectors, airports, large corporations, and sensitive government facilities requires the deployment of sophisticated access control methods, both physical and cyber-based.

However, even with all the necessary measures in place, the security of an information system can still be compromised. Attacks, intrusions, or even crimes can be carried out remotely through the use of a computer or any other mobile or wireless information device.

Legal informatics addresses this precise issue — namely, identifying the perpetrator(s) of such malicious acts and gathering irrefutable evidence against them. It involves the use of specialized techniques for collecting, identifying, describing, securing, extracting, authenticating, analyzing, and interpreting digital data.

Since multimedia has become a massive source of information that is duplicated, processed, stored, and exchanged in mere fractions of a second, cybersecurity can no longer be ensured without securing multimedia data.

Curriculum Highlights

Core Courses

The Master’s program in Legal Informatics and Multimedia focuses on two inseparable aspects of computer science: the security of digital data (1D, 2D, 3D) and the forensic analysis of computer systems. These two specialized branches of computing require skills that go beyond those typically needed for system maintenance and basic cybersecurity.

The ILM specialization offers both theoretical and practical in-depth training on the technologies used to provide the necessary tools for securing and performing forensic analysis on data and information systems. The program offers theoretical specialization in the following areas: cryptography, cryptanalysis, data analysis, databases, data quality, and digital investigation, along with practical expertise in: biometrics, cybercrime, e-commerce, electronic payment, forensic analysis of multimedia data in various forms, and forensic analysis of information systems (with an option to focus on information systems, mobile systems, or networks).

Students applying to the ILM Master's program are expected to have language skills, particularly in French and English. The curriculum does not include dedicated language courses, as two members of the teaching staff are committed to teaching certain subjects in English (cybercrime, IT law and ethics, legal informatics, and research methodology), in order to help students practice a foreign language in a high-level technical context.

Advanced Topics

The strength of this program lies in its ability to produce diverse professional profiles, thanks to the concept of personalized learning paths it offers. This customization is made possible through a wide range of elective courses, allowing students to choose the skills they wish to acquire, in accordance with the spirit of the LMD system (Licence-Master-Doctorate).

The targeted professional profiles include:

  • Auditor
  • Advisor
  • Consultant
  • Expert
  • Coach
  • Trainer
  • Developer
  • Designer
  • Executive
  • Researcher (It should be noted that the academic Master's degree allows access to competitive exams for entry into third-cycle doctoral training.)

In the following fields of expertise:

  • E-commerce
  • E-payment
  • Cybercrime
  • Biometric data protection
  • Visual document protection
  • Forensics of visual documents
  • Forensics of information systems
  • Forensics of mobile systems
  • Forensics of networks

Admissions Information

The admission conditions are defined by Decree No. 363 dated June 9, 2014, which sets out the requirements for enrollment in university studies leading to a Master's degree.

Admission to the first year of the Master's program in Legal Informatics and Multimedia (ILM) is open to candidates from the Computer Science field who hold a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, regardless of the specialization.

As stated in Article 6 of the aforementioned Decree No. 363, the teaching team may request the organization of tests or interviews in order to select candidates.
