After the long suffering of the students of the southwest due to travelling to the universities of the north to study, the state decided at the beginning of the 1980s to establish a university institution project in the southwest, which actually materialised in 1986 in the form of a national institute of higher education in mechanical engineering, established by Decree No. 86-170 of 05/08/1986, to become in 1992 a university centre, by Executive Decree No. 92- 296 of 07/07/1992, to be upgraded in 2009 to a university bearing the name of the mujahid Tahri Mohamed by Executive Decree No. 09-07 of 04/01/2009, Tahri Mohamed University Bechar is an important university pole located in the southwest of Algeria that aims to contribute to the formation of tomorrow's administrators, as it occupies an important national position by containing eight faculties, namely: 1 - Faculty of Medicine, 2 - Faculty of Technology, 3 - Faculty of Fine Sciences, 4 - Faculty of Economics, Business and Management Sciences, 5 - Faculty of Law and Political Sciences, 6 - Faculty of Natural and Life Sciences, 7 - Faculty of Arts and Languages, 8 - Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The university has twenty (20) research laboratories, including the Laboratory of Excellence.
Tahri Mohamed University -Bechar has also recently been supported by the opening of new departments, including the Department of Pharmacy at the Faculty of Medicine and an Institute of Architecture. In addition to containing ten (10) fields at the bachelor's and master's level, it also contains one (01) field for the degree of doctor . The university has 710 professors in various categories, including 215 in the rank of professor of higher education.
