Program Overview

The dental medicine program at the Faculty of Medicine in Laghouat, in addition to aiming for local academic excellence, also opens up internationally. This six-year program, designed to obtain the Doctor of Dental Medicine degree, prepares students to handle oral diseases and perform necessary surgical interventions. The program offers interdisciplinary education in fundamental and clinical sciences, benefiting from high-quality academic supervision and modern equipment such as molecular biology labs and medical simulation centers. In addition to the theoretical and practical aspects of dentistry, the program includes training in the management of dental centers. Graduates will be able to work in hospitals, private clinics, research centers, and medical structures, both nationally and internationally. The international openness will allow students to broaden their professional horizons and offer job opportunities in various countries. Admission requirements are based on high school results and target students from the wilayas of Djelfa, Laghouat, Ghardaïa, El Meniaa, El Bayadh, and Tiaret, while also welcoming international students.

Curriculum Highlights

Core Courses

1st Year of Dental Medicine

The first year courses cover essential foundational knowledge for dental medicine training. They include general anatomy, general physiology, histology/embryology, genetics, biochemistry, physics, biophysics, biomathematics/statistics, chemistry, as well as social health and human sciences. Students also take courses in English and French.

2nd Year of Dental Medicine

In the second year, students focus on more specific courses such as conservative dentistry/endodontics, prosthetics, human and dental anatomy, dentofacial orthopedics, oral pathology and surgery, and periodontology. They also study biomaterials, histology, microbiology, hygiene and prevention, immunology, computer science, and physiology.

3rd Year of Dental Medicine

In the third year, students deepen their knowledge in conservative dentistry/endodontics, dentofacial orthopedics, periodontology, oral pathology and surgery, and prosthetics. Courses in imaging, pharmacology, pathological anatomy, oxyology, occlusodontics, and anesthesiology are also part of the curriculum.

4th Year of Dental Medicine

In the fourth year, teaching continues with courses in conservative dentistry/endodontics, dentofacial orthopedics, periodontology, oral pathology and surgery, and prosthetics. Students also learn about implantology, pediatric dentistry, medical pathology and dentistry, geriatric dentistry, and medical ethics and law.

5th Year of Dental Medicine

The fifth year continues the specialization with advanced courses in conservative dentistry/endodontics, dentofacial orthopedics, periodontology, oral pathology and surgery, and prosthetics. Students also take courses in implantology, pediatric dentistry, epidemiology, and ergonomics.

6th Year of Dental Medicine

In the sixth year, students undertake mandatory internships to gain practical experience. They also prepare a thesis, which they must present orally to a jury. After successfully completing the internships and the thesis defense, students receive their Doctor of Dental Surgery degree.

Advanced Topics

The advanced subjects of the dental medicine program at the Faculty of Laghouat cover specialized and in-depth areas. In the fourth year, students focus on implantology, pediatric and geriatric dentistry, addressing specific pathologies related to children and the elderly. Emphasis is also placed on medical pathology and dentistry, combining medical knowledge with dental practice. The fifth year delves deeper into implantology and pediatric dentistry while exploring concepts such as epidemiology and ergonomics, which are essential for modern and effective dental practice. The sixth year is marked by clinical internships and the preparation of a final thesis. Students gain advanced practical skills and must demonstrate their ability to handle complex cases. The program also emphasizes scientific research, ethics, and medical law, providing comprehensive training for qualified practitioners capable of dealing with a wide range of clinical situations.
