Program Overview

Stady in Algeria

University Center Of El-Bayadh

Institute of Natural and Life Sciences

Applied microbiology is a science that studies microbes and the way they interact with our world. It highlights how the potential of microbes can be harnessed and utilised in areas such as biotechnology, pest control, pharmaceutical applications, etc.

The Master of Applied Microbiology at Nour Bachir University Centre in El Beid is an academic programme that aims to introduce the student to beneficial microbes and make him aware of how to benefit from them as well as harmful ones and the extent of their impact on the environment. This educational programme also aims to teach the student various methods such as pasteurisation, sterilisation and enzyme technology techniques in order to obtain food products such as dairy products or manufactured products, and the use of microbes in the production of antibiotics. The student will also learn about the role of microbes in optimising plant growth.

Curriculum Highlights

Core Courses

The study programme for this major contains subjects distributed over 4 hexagonal courses that aim to provide the student with theoretical and applied knowledge in applied microbiology. The programme contains:

-Fermented Food Technology: The course aims to introduce the student to beneficial and harmful microbes in the food industry as well as manufacturing methods.

-General Microbiology Techniques: This course aims to teach the student the techniques of isolation, enumeration and identification of microbes

-Microbial reactions: Through this course, the student will study the various interactions that exist between microbes.

-Communication: In this course, the student learns how to prepare a scientific research in his/her specialisation by using scientific terms related to microbiology

-Molecular Monitoring Techniques: The student gains knowledge in molecular biology that allows for the control of pathogenic microbes in foods.

-Therapeutic microbes: This course introduces the student to the benefits of microorganisms for human and animal health and the mechanisms used

-Legislation: The content of this course enables the student to know the Algerian legislation in the field of scientific research and technological development

-Data Analysis: The student learns how to analyse the statistical analysis of his/her results and be able to read them

-Hygiene and safety: This course aims to teach students how to maintain hygiene and safety in laboratories and how to deal with dangerous situations

-Analysing and Writing Articles: This course enables the student to read and analyse scientific articles and the methodology of writing them as a preparation for the doctoral stage

-Entrepreneurship: This course aims to introduce students to the labour market

Advanced Topics

-Microbes and Health: The student will study the most important microbes that are pathogenic to humans.

-Industrial fermentations: The programme covers the fundamentals of fermentation and the growth of microbes in biological media.

- Valorisation of agri-food by-products: The course programme highlights ways of valorising the products produced by food factories in order to achieve sustainable development.

-Enzyme Technology: This course introduces students to the methods of purification and purification of enzymes and their uses in industry

-Separation and purification of biological molecules: This course introduces students to the methods of separation and purification of fermentation products and how to preserve and calibrate proteins.

-Microbiology of fermentations: This course introduces the student to the biotechnology industry and its economic importance as well as the most important primary and secondary metabolites.

-Quality control of fermentation products: The student will be able to determine whether a food or drug is subject to applicable regulatory requirements for microbiological parameters and learn the meaning of quality.

-Biotechnology of the environnment : This course programme introduces students to the steps necessary to define, develop, use and control biotechnological processes applied to environmental problems.

-Microbe-Plant Interactions: This course enables the student to learn about the various interactions between microbes and plants, including those that contribute to optimising their growth by secreting certain metabolites such as: Plant hormones, stabilisation of atmospheric nitrogen, as well as their role in the mineral nutrition of the plant, ...

-Applied Genetic Engineering in Microbial Biotechnology: This course introduces students to the techniques of molecular biology and the use of genetically modified microbes in industry.
