Program Overview

The criminal history of societies in their confrontation with this societal evil shows that criminal acts have always outpaced the law in its punitive character, even though the law is often charged with a normative function. This ongoing and recurring struggle between society and criminals of all kinds is essentially about norms.

Public authorities, being entrusted with this mission by society, attempt to enforce this norm that is supposed to be adopted, and thus respected by all its members, including the criminal.

Although other laws are tasked with defining behavioral norms (civil law, commercial law, etc.), criminal law often, if not always, takes the lead as it protects the moral, physical, and material security of individuals.

This underscores the importance, in the eyes of individuals, of the struggle in all its forms led by public authorities. Crime or criminality remains a major obstacle to the development of states, whether socially, culturally, economically, etc.

With globalization and the multiple crises it often generates, it is urgent for a country like Algeria to develop research in criminology in all its forms. The Master’s program in criminology is thus crucial to support the efforts of public authorities and encourage greater involvement of Algerian universities in combating local, national, and transnational crime.
